Some might not believe it, but when you compile numbers... it is incredible to see. Casco Viejo is truly leading Panama as an example of social revitalization fueled by an economy that is gathering its own momentum. Its image is one of the favorite subjects of international reporters who find in Casco Viejo`s historic architecture and mixed community a wonderful story to tell... the story of true Panama and why people should come to explore it.
Fundación San Felipe is one of the oldest ngo`s working in Casco. Although you might not be aware of them, they keep one of Casco`s jewels in great shape (the San Felipe Neri Church) and run programs for kids in the neighborhood.
I don´t think I have seen an apartment in Casco Viejo to be even close to what this one offers. And I don`t think there will ever be one like this, since as you know, Casco Antiguo is all about limited offer! each home has a unique shape and history. So it is truly one of a kind. Looking for a unique, luxury home? search no further...
We were at the Metallica concert last March, jumping, screaming and singing... and who do we see on the screen (where they show the faces of the public)? Little Zed on the shoulders of Cristine... headbanging and singing every single song... even the ones I didn`t know. This month, Zed and I will have 25 years of difference, but somehow when you meet him you feel the difference isn`t that much.
Walking to the office, found this incredible surprise! straight from mother nature... reminding us wildlife is exactly that... crazy wild!
Downstairs, kids watch a pinguin movie at the computer lab. Normally, during their vacations they would have been roaming the streets with only mischief in their minds. Upstairs, a journalist defends freedom while downstairs freedom is created in the minds of local women who are breaking the cycle of poverty. Welcome to Santa Familia.
My cellphone camera filmed this group of kids at Casco Viejo playing football at Plaza Herrera. There wasn`t much of a thought strategy, as you can see everyone just runs after the ball. But the truly hilarious thing is to see them splashing everywhere and when they try to tackle... it becomes water polo!
El Casqueño, Casco Viejo`s newspaper has now a website! beautifully done, you`ll find the articles both in Spanish and English. Check it out!
El Casqueño, el periódico del Casco Antiguo, ahora tiene un sitio web! bien diseñado, ahí encontrarán artículos del Casco Viejo tanto en español como en inglés. Visita el sitio aquí:
Bar hoping, poetry reading, surfing, reading, everything is reachable in and from Casco Viejo.
Santa Ana, one of Casco Antiguo`s most colorful barrios is celebrating its anniversary. Curious about the number that came out, I tried to research a bit about its history... still numbers don´t match! but, hey! anytime is good for a celebration...
What I like about Casco is that it is really a small city/ town. You walk around and you bump into a number of random stuff, in a wide range of categories.
If you are a pet owner, ticks are one of your worst nightmares. But ticks in tropical countries are everywhere... so what can you do? AVACA`s members got together into a fumigation program, hopefully with good effects!
Taking care of street cat and dog population is part of taking care of the city. Families in Casco Viejo had the opportunity to get their pets operated at no cost this Sunday through the ngo Spay Panama. Also, another event took place in Santa Ana when artists gathered to create awareness about the importance of keeping the city beautiful.
Panama Viejo was founded in an undefendable and unhealthy swamp. The Spanish back in 1673 corrected this error by founding the "new city" at a rocky peninsula and surrounding the area with an amazing wall. Today, walking outside the wall is a beautiful experience... check it out!
This growth rate is higher than expected, but economic performance in the region is very diverse. Stated CEPAL Executive Secretary Alicia Bárcena. How is Panama doing?
Colombia`s 200th anniversary yesterday had given me the ocassion to tell about Casco Viejo... back when Panama was part of Colombia. Curious? fantastic historic photos here!
Did you know Panama uses and throws away 500 million plastic bags a year? each person on a single visit to the supermarket uses about 9 bags. We go to the supermarket once a week, and our population is about 3.5 million. What can we do? this is affecting our ecosystems... and we are part of it.
Panama replaces Chile in the Latin Technology Index published by the Latin Business Chronicle. And Casco Viejo claims its own statistic!
Movie Under the Stars, Jazz and Salsa live, concerts and La Bastille day... everything in July at the Casco!
I don`t know why I didn`t realize this before, but a big percentage of Casco`s entrepreneurs are in their thirties or early fourties. From internet businesses to restaurants and bars, Casco Viejo isn`t "viejo" (old) at all! Which is interesting, because it means the Casco offers an opportunity to make business happen.
Be careful, these kids shoot smiles at everyone!
These photos were taken last week... while sipping wine and enjoying the breeze at a friend´s balcony! love Casco Viejo...
When Leanne invited me to "Glam Night" last week I wasn´t quite sure what to expect. She mentioned it would be a "girls only" event and a lot of fun. First event of its kind in Casco! would it work?
Culture and money, for some reason they are not always perceived as close relatives. Culture and social change seem like cousins, but somehow not necesarily people think they go to the same parties. However, it is through culture that we generate tourism and many other activities... and it so happens that as a tool for change is quite a bomb on its own. And that bomb has started to catch a bit of fire in Casco Viejo.
Simply incredible. Overnight, the Cinta Costera had grass, trees and connected to San Felipe´s ramp! Still not clear though how traffic will work, especially the access to the "underground parking".
Tomorrow, exactly the same day Berlusconi will be in Casco Viejo, the Casco will be invaded by cute girls. And no, it is not what are thinking!!!
Most of Casco Viejo´s government buildings where designed by Italians. Today, the Italian influence is everywhere, from our President to restaurants and even hospitals. La Dolce Vita and Panama´s Caribbean style have proved to be a great combination!
Weekends in Casco Viejo start on Thursday! art parties, soccer parties or just tapas under the full moon. Your choice!
Panamanians are fully a Caribbean blooded creature. You would think that crazy storm on a Saturday would mean "stay home" and "be cautious". No way! why should we, specially when we can impress a girl by doing what we do best?
Latest photos of the advance of Cinta Costera´s Second Phase into Casco Viejo. I was at the roof terrace of Casa Malecon, Terraplen´s first restored building, and took these photos. The maps I provide here are from La Prensa and from La Estrella´s newspaper and they explain very well the position of both "Cintas" at the coastline.
El Casqueño second edition is out! beautiful and thoughtful, it is a fair window into Casco Viejo´s everyday life and most important issues. Also, The Visitor dedicated a special edition to the old neighborhood... check it out!
This weekend is here! the Music Festival has arrived.....check out the schedule here!
A while ago I wrote in one of our brochures regarding a property at Plaza Catedral something like "Plaza Catedral is where everything happens. From the jazz festival to political demonstrations".
Looking to move to Casco Viejo but need a three bedroom for your family? here I review Casa Vidal, a three bedroom fully restored townhouse in the best of San Felipe, Casco Viejo.
I had some incredible dreams, all water related. No "mystery of the brain" here... outside it was pouring rain! When we came out for our morning workout, a beautiful rainbow had formed...
In the past few months we have gotten quite some interest from people coming to work with Procter and Gamble in living in Casco Viejo. They are attracted by the charm of the colonial city, its "small town" lifestyle and yet closeness to the modern areas of Panama and outdoor spaces where to excercise such as Cinta Costera, Ancon Hill and the Causeway. And I knew Procter was moving their headquarters from Chile here. What I didn´t know,
Some projects take a long time, this one started in 2006. However, it is crucial for Panama not only because it reorganizes the sewage system but because it is crucial to recover what is mainly our trademark: our oceans and rivers.
I know this month is ALL about the soccer World Cup. However... we do have other things going on! (which won´t compete with your ability to see the games).
Have a beer with your friends, bring your dog, your family... and sit under the stars of Casco Viejo to watch a movie!
Sometimes the National Theatre isn´t good at is promoting their events. So, I´ve made the personal resolution of posting everything I can about their events. This one in particular is by a Panamanian composer, who also wrote the music for a mini movie filmed in Casco Viejo called...
This past weekend, a small event to celebrate the Environment Day turned into a hughe success. Beautiful palms were planted, but also the seed into our children´s minds about taking care of trees and the environment.

If you are the type of sports fanatic that knows every statistic, name in the field and really, really enjoy watching sports (American Football, soccer, basketball)... then you should join this Casco Viejo crowd.
180 Degree contrast from my ultra mellow Sunday, in came this week with dozen of important events!
Sunday was so mellow... nice breeze at Plaza Francia, everyone was out walking either with family or their dogs, or both. Casco at its best, even the Cotton Candy guy came out. A spectacular sunset crowned the day. My little phone camera captured these images, and believe me, I don´t know photoshop to modify them...
Panama seems to be strenghtening its ties with Italy. From art exhibits to a visit of President Berlusconi himself, Casco Viejo seems to be the place where everything happens.
From May 27th to the 6th of June, the National Theatre and Anita Villalaz Theatre in Casco Viejo will be hosting the Saint Malo Music Festival. This festival is one of the few that preserves a classic tone to it with chamber groups, choirs and symphonic orchestras.
Here is the schedule!
Argentina and Italy showing some of their best cultural icons in Casco Viejo the same week!
This morning was so nice: cool breeze running by the beach, cozy clouds and a dramatic scenario of rocks, water and sunrise. Again, I´m not the best photographer, but well.... here are my best shots. I had some sort of zen experience that made me think about roots and hidden beauty.
Hip Hop might be one of the best tools we have to talk to the new generations. Fundación Calicanto is hosting a workshop on June 10th with Hip Hop artist George Martínez.
Raising the bar of art galleries in Casco Viejo in comes Carlos Weil with his well known gallery Weil Art. From erotic art on original Panama Canal Bonds to interesting antiques and easy to travel (but meaningful) souvenirs.
Casco Viejo is a multilateral prism where every color adds to its beauty. This is the story of Ramón Cuevas, who has brought light into the poorest area of Santa Ana through baseball.
La Casona de Brujas has become for years now a Casco Viejo icon for bohemian life and art. They have made their name breaking the ice at interesting unrestored buildings creating energy wherever they go. They are moving again... find out where!
Tonight! Panama´s National Ballet will be performing at the National Theatre in Casco Viejo. Starts at 7 p.m.... be early!
The Panama Canal Zone was name given to the area surrounding the Panama Canal that was considered US territory within the terms of the initial Canal treaty. It was given back to Panama in the year 2000 as per the Torrijos- Carter treaty in the 70´s. While it generated controversy throughout its life, it also defined generations of Panamanians and Americans.
How to fight poverty effectively is a question that thousands of organizations around the world make themselves every day. In Casco Viejo, Panama, an experiment that started about two years ago by Fundacion Calicanto has started to root and bear fruits. It is focused on women, knowing that through them, you are able to change a family and eventually a society.
How does it work? keep reading....
Paragliders flew over Casco Viejo yesterday... what a view!
This year, Argentina is celebrating 200 years of existance with a fantastic performance in Casco Viejo. "The three faces of Tango" will be a show of the best of dancing, music and singing... tango. It will gather on stage for the first time, a Piazzola playing a Piazzola (grandson playing music from his grandfather!), award winning tango dancers and beautiful tango singers.
Have you been looking for a large commercial space to rent in Casco Viejo? or for a really small one where you can provide neighborhood services? Benedetti Hermanos has both. A lucky combination of elegance, flexibility and location, the commercial space is designed to have a cafe and several retail (such as pharmacy, bank, laundry, etc) and has a mezzanine space for offices.
It seems like dance took over this month! Momentum with Wizard of Oz, Danza Nova with their recently created ngo... and more!
Since 2007 several multinationals have moved their headquarters to Panama. The first one to break the ice was Maersk. Today, there are 36 multinational companies in the country and the government´s goal for December 2011 is to reach the 100. See below the list
I don´t think there are official "dog parks" in Panama, anywhere, yet. However, Casco Viejo has a couple of sites that are regularly used by dog owners and have become doggy parks. They include beaches, park and furry loops... check it out!
How is the Panamanian banking system doing in 2010? La Prensa ran different articles at Martes Finaciero featuring everything from investment to real estate, loans and more.
Last night we had a great time at Bohemios. Located next to VIP Juice at Avenida A, between 4th and 5th street, this restaurant is just fun. Owned and run by Casco Viejo locals, the ambiance is totally relaxed. Plus, you can sign your name at the wall while having very good fish tacos or fried fish sticks and crispy french fries. My favorite: the samosas... I loved the mango sauce!
The World Bank issued an interesting chart this week featuring the growth pronostics for Latin America for 2010 and 2011. Their main message pointed out to a world wide recovering economy, even if still quite slow. On Latin America, their pronostics showed Panama among the leaders in the region...
A group of maybe 15 people gather for dinner all together. They might know each other or not, but the ambiance is welcoming to make new friends. Last time I went to Diablo Rosso for one of these cozy dinners I had a great time! the opportunity repeats itself...

Every 30 or 40 years Panama´s Catholic church celebrates the appointment of a new Monseñor. A beautifull ceremony takes place... and I was there to catch part of it with my camera!
Named after the famous Italian movie, "Cinema Paradiso" is Casco Antiguo´s new video store. Check it out!
Tacón in Spanish means "high heels", and somehow is the name of this contemporary art workshop that will take place at Calle 3era (Los del Patio losdelpatio.pa@gmail.com ). Starting May 1st, the workshop will last 6 months, and will be held every Saturday, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Tonight will be movie night at Calle 4ta, Casco Viejo. "Paco", as we know him, will be showing the movie El Proceso de lo Posible" (Spain 2007) at his ngo called Espacio Común (Common Space). This movie was directed by Sonia Ros and Pablo Zareceansky and aims to open a dialogue by showing two extremes: the Economic Forum that happened in Nairobi in 2007 and the Social Forum that took place in Kenia, almost at the same time. An interesting proposal, starting at 7 p.m.

Spring is here for most of the North Hemisfere! in Casco Viejo, we have a little bit of it. We wanted to share its beautiful colors and wish you a fantastic season!

Thursday night was full of romantic music and art. Friday promises to be exciting and - yes- a bit chaotic!
The Arco Chato was shinning bright last night: it´s Santo Domingo monastery got restored and inagurated.
This Thursday, a group of artists (glad to see our Casconian representatives!!!) have gathered in an unusual event: an auction for art made with recycled paper. "Paper" in Spanish is also called "Papel" which happens to be also the word we use as in "roll" (a.i. the roll of a person). So it is called the "Roll/Paper of artists counts".
MACRO is a festival that gathers different artistic expressions. This year it joins the FAE Theatre Festival (see previous posting today for Schedule) and many other venues like the Caribbean Publicity Festival, the Panama Graphic Design Festival and a fun Fashion Fest. FAE Theatre Festival is here! check out the schedule: who - what - when
Last night, Panama had its very first "heavy metal" concert! and we enjoyed the hell out of it. I didn´t realize how many heavy metal lovers we had in Casco Viejo, and probably they didn´t realize I was one of them as well. Panama has a unique species of headbangers, not like anyone in Latin America... nor the States.
The "little devils" at Diablo Rosso are organizing a series of talks about Patrimony. They´ll promise a lot of quality information and no "bla bla bla"... straight to the point! Whether you are interested in the technical part of restoration, or in the legal basis, or how Patrimony works around the world and compare it to Casco, this is a series you can´t miss.
Yesterday, the old Club Union in Casco Viejo boarded up the property, which is a clear sign that they´ll start construction really soon. Rumors in the street have told us there will be plenty of demolition, hopefully they´ll be supervised by Patrimonio Historico as there is a lot of beautiful historic structure inside.
La Casona will be hosting this weekend in honor to Women´s Day an art show featuring female Panamanian artists. Last time I was there, she featured great work from Marta Sanchez and many other artists who worked either painting, photography, and even sculpture. This year they are including oriental dance, jewelry and more! The weekend seems to start with a nice Electro & Dancehall party!
The boys at Relic really know how to throw a party!!! everyone shows up, including President Ricardo Martinelli.
Walking down to our dinner appointment at Antares, I passed by the San José Church at A Avenue (better known as Altar de Oro or Golden Altar) and to my surprise a sweet music was coming out: the Paraguayan Embassy had arranged a free concert featuring Bach and Vivaldi (not the Seasons! concerto for piccolo and strings) and some works from the Jesuit missions in South America. Beautiful! I only wished these things where known in advance.
Mediterranean food with a Lebanese touch. I hope eventually they´ll decide more for Lebanese, as I´m a big fan. Check out Casco Antiguo´s new restaurant: Antar!

One of the largest projects in Casco Viejo, Benedetti Hermanos is finally gearing up to deliver units this year. With a total of eight apartments and one large commercial space (basically 400 mt2, over 4000 ft2). The residential units average 200 mt2 (over 2000 ft2) with penthouses around 345 mt2 or more. Real photos of the finishes here!
It was a hot Sunday! kids running around everywhere, I think this is the first time where I´ve seen a soccer game where kids ride bicycles in the middle of the field during the time out. I´d say, it was exciting! 80 kids!
Social change can be tackled different ways, but probably the most sustainable one is when people from all layers of a community come together for a common goal. Slowly, Casco Viejo is becoming a model on how to fight extreme poverty through community activism.
Tonight! a group of businesses will gather into what is becoming a monthly art party in Casco Viejo: Diablo Rosso, JungleWood, Super Gourmet and Relic are coreographing different events so you can enjoy all places and offers. What and when here!

Hotel Central: You could start pointing fingers right left and center. But really, who is to blame?
You might not know this, but the way a bus in Panama is painted isn´t that random. It is actually a canvas of both the owner and the painter. Painted on its walls you´ll see who they admire, what they dream off, how they see themselves and who they love. This art is almost dissappearing now because of the bad reputation of the drivers. Get to know it now! keep reading...
Life is stressing. The world has become a very stressfull place, I must say. People honking at you, fighting for parking, running around... But when the sun comes down and Casco Viejo settles at its "jazzy" mood, you breathe deep and walk your dog out. Then you can check out surprises on each corner that will make you smile again...
Last night was fun, Susan finally inaugurated "formally" her Chateau du Klippers, Casco Antiguo´s first Beauty Salon. She chose a couple of models among Casconians to show off her staff´s abilities: those who we were used to seeing with straight hair wore curls and viceversa. And what a surprising change!
Being a tooth is so unfair: no one thinks about you, you get smashed right, left and center, and when something happens it is really expensive to fix it. But doesn´t have to be. In fact, you could get everything you need for your teeth done in Panama with great quality and still go partying. Check this out,
Investing in Latin America? This might be interesting to you...
Every day, people bring hope. And that is the real beauty of the fight.
I was so impressed by Lizz Wright´s voice I guess I had to write a special posting just for her. Enjoy the video! her album The Orchard is really good. I liked "My Heart" a lot.
From the fire hands of Juanito and his flamenco guitar to the sensual voice of Lizzy Wright.. this year was over the top!
2009 was an "interesting" year for business and the market in general. How did the financial crisis affected Casco Viejo? How was 2009 in terms of Real Estate, investment, community? How is 2010 looking like?
Only a few days for Jazz Fest and related or unrelated parties start to sprout. Here I got an invitation to a big party by DJ Seth Troxler who will be at Club Union on January 16th, starting at 9 p.m. The party will be filmed by Red Bull Music Academy Radio.
In the last 8 years, Panama has had an incredible growth. Tourism, construction, the Panama Canal, banking, every area seemed to be thriving, and got the country to touch amazing growing rates comparable only with China (9% - 10%). But there was an area that was left behind: public transportation. Today, we got good news about it.
Some say Panama is Hong Kong meeting Costa Rica. Panama´s depth is there for the curious soul, but is also a place with a guilt free laid back culture that allows you to disconnect from the world if that is your choice. White beaches or history? why choose?
Panama Jazz Fest 2010 Calendar
Roy Gumpel has a very good eye and a sense of authenticity. He has also 36 years in the photography business and an outgoing personality. Visited Panama for a job last year and fell in love with Casco Viejo, so now he is back! He is organizing a photography workshop called "For the Rest of Us" which will start January 16th (so you can have great photos of the Jazz Fest!).
Waste less, workout more, better eating habits, drink more water... so many thoughts cross through your mind when thinking about this upcoming year. But they are only thoughts until you work at making them real. As Nike said... "Just do it". This should be called the "Just Do It"- Year.

I am not the Grinch. I love Christmas, I love holidays. But the traffic, craziness of people buying just whatever is not for me!
I have to say, I worked at the Smithsonian and once of the things I never got tired of was visiting the Panama Canal. Nothing like navigating through pure jungle, checking out the monkeys (cariblancos, titis, howlers), the crocodriles, the birds and of course, the huge Panamax ships.

It gives one of the best overviews of Panama's economy and the reasoning behind the expansion that I have seen.

The thing with Spanish is that the vocal "i" sounds like "e" in English) along with Eric and Vladimir who are childhood friends that decided to invest here and now are an active part of Casco Antiguo´s community.
Friday night, was a historic night. No one would have thought that finally a restored condominium in Casco Viejo would have the following address: Terraplen, Casa Malecon. But Friday night, the project inaugurated, in the middle of a controversial Cinta Costera project and a raw area that struggles to resist change.

Direct flight from Panama to Amsterdam: ten hours (and a half) later I had passed from full tropical weather to Amsterdam´s chilli autum, and eating dutch pancakes wrapped in four layers of clothing. Being from Panama, for me, cold is an exotic destination. But really, While I can take a plane at night and be in cold weather the next morning eating pancakes, anyone in Amsterdam can do the same and be on a boat at the Panama Canal lake in the afternoon watching monkeys or even hiking at one of our 15 minute away national parks and discover what the rainforest is all about.

For such a small country, Panama has been known internationally by legends such as Roberto Duran (boxing), Lafitte Pincay (horse riding), Mariano Rivera (Yankees) and more recently Irving Saladino who won the first gold medal at an Olimpic Game for the country ever. Their common denominators have not only been the country where they where born in (Panama) but the fact that most of them come from very humble origins. Many of them lived at some stage in Casco Viejo.
The Music Festival Alfredo Saint Malo is coming! This year will be held from May 28th to June 7th in Casco Viejo. See the events calendar here
By Friday, Plaza Catedral (known also as Plaza Independencia) had "new residents"... tents started to pop out, artists and hippies Woodstock style camped along with the Naso to support their cause. By Sunday, they had a small concert organized taking advantage that the Flea Market was going on.
The king is coming! The naso tribe has been camping for a while now at Plaza Catedral asking for a hearing with the President to talk about their relocation. The government is building a hydroelectric plant for which they have to be relocated... something that somehow they still haven´t figured out. So their king, Valentin Santana is coming this sunday to push the issue and create awareness on their cause.
This past month, we have seen two iconic cases gone to the papers provoking scandal among all who care and love our Cathedral Plaza: the overbuilding of PH Independencia and the falling of Hotel Central´s lateral calicanto wall. What a weekend! Panama´s Presidential Election, How does it work? who won? what to expect?

It was about time! residents and business owners of Casco Antiguo are coming together to help Casco Antiguo develop the best way possible. AVACA for its name in Spanish, is open to everyone: residents, owners, business owners and Casco Antiguo fans.
Developing in Casco Viejo is both a science and an art. Experience and common sense have to blend with the historic restrictions and be sensitive to the environment. It is a complex process that we only recommend to people who have the correct skills and team behind them, and that will be on the ground full time for at least three years. While most of our clients might feel this is too much, every year I see examples of what can happen if something goes wrong. Yesterday, we witnessed a very sad example of lack of planning and the most basic common sense, which led to the partial destruction of one of Casco Antiguo´s most valuable icons.
Recently I published a list of all the properties For Rent in Casco Viejo. Now, here is my updated list with what is For Sale in Casco Antiguo right now. See how much the fully restored condos in Casco Viejo are going for and also some of the best located unrestored buildings. The map marks also where the main active hotel projects are located: either existing or under construction.
"Raindrops are falling on my head".... but it doesn´t stop the carnival! Panama is entering into the rainny season, hated by many but highly appreciated by all nature lovers. Emerging artists, locals, investors, art, music and criollo food. Casco Viejo has become Panama´s reference for cultural events. But there is more to it than meets the eye...
With a diversified economy and a strong, conservative, banking system, Panama is on the move to protect the country as much as possible from the current economic crisis. For the last three years, Panama positioned itself as one of the fastest growing economies in the region, with numbers as far as 10% a growth reached only by countries such as China.Worldwide, this year has been very different for everyone. But Panama’s advantage over the region may survive ...
To spark change through dance. To transform children into creative forces... Casco Viejo has started a pioneer program that will change from inside out.
After a long absence, Air France - KLM celebrated on March 30th it´s first "comeback" anniversary with an important number of passengers to the region. A multi destination regional strategy might be "coming soon" as Central American Ministers of Tourism meet in Panama in the next few months...

For now, here are the pictures of the preparations for this afternoon...
With the moving of the regional headquarters of some important companies, the availability of rental apartments might be a bit short these days. Also, the process of the contract, signing and taking over the apartment might be stressful... and even worst, hooking up the utilities (phone, electricity and water in some cases) a true nightmare. So, how to go about renting in Casco Viejo?
One of the things I enjoy living here is that I can choose from a range of activities. Casco Antiguo is a step away from the countryside, which we call the "interior" (not really sure why....). We are also so close to the Canal Zone, that hiking primary jungle is possible within 15 minutes. Fishing at the lake, kayak around, so many things you can do! Check out the list of upcoming hikes by local clubs... join!
Panama will receive today a delegation led by Prince Philippe of Belgium and his Minister of Economy Vincent Van Quickenborne. The goal: to participate in the expasion of the Panama Canal and explore the country´s benefits as a regional hub.
Breaking the cycle of poverty in Casco Viejo is really simple. It just takes dedication, knowledge and love. Children are so eager for these elements, they´ll do the rest. They have found a home in this program, and now their home just got better!
From the Oficina del Casco Antiguo calendar... these are the upcoming events. Some are "to be confirmed", but is good to keep them in mind:
A 705 million dollars international business park is being built 15 minutes away from Panama´s Colonial Quarter, Casco Antiguo. Learn where, how and who is involved...
These past two weeks have been a frenzy for Ariel Espino and his team at Oficina del Casco Antiguo. Not only he was running business as usual with all the social programs the OCA has and building renovations that range from social housing within Casco Viejo to the rescue of old ruins and turning them into beautiful public spaces, but he was also - and for the first time at that office - launching an ambitious website, and even more, hosting a special UNESCO delegation that arrived to check on how things where going down here due to some letters they have gotten that the Casco was in danger.
Fantastic, free and fun... Casa Gongora is the place to start your Friday dance night out!

Fiesta! This upcoming week is Panama´s most beloved holiday: Carnivals. It is said to be the only thing Panamanians take seriously. My personal opinion is that Carnivals are too extreme for my taste. So here is a calendar with the different religious and non religious festivals which can come in handy if you are planning a trip to Panama soon

"Despite the global economic downturn, Panama's economy remains strong—the country expects GDP growth of 8% this year, Nordström says, and while work on hotel projects has slowed slightly, construction permits are up 35%, he says." Check out this article from HOTELS magazine... quite interesting!

Giovanni, a Sicilian friend who has come to Panama to distribute wine is teaching us all about his beautiful land and the wonderful wine it produces. Soap operas in Latinamerica are huge. I remember growing up watching all sorts of soap operas, from the funny Brazilian ones (sexy but at the same time with a naive sense of humor) to the more aggresive Mexican or the frankly confusing ( and loooooonnnnnggggg) Venezuelan productions.Panama did not wanted to be left out!

Last Friday a nice article came out at La Prensa by Harry Castro. It had fantastic pictures of one of the most elegant buildings of the time: the old Sociedad Española de Beneficencia. "Panama is up-and-coming like never before, quickly becoming the destination of Central America. And there's little wonder: Panama's beautiful Caribbean coastline remains undiscovered in many parts, fiercely protected by the Kuna tribe who shun modernisation, while Panama City is a destination in its own right with skyscrapers juxtaposed with the old town of Casco Viejo". This is the online quote from Conde Nast Traveler´s Top 20 Destinations for 2009. Learn more!
This weekend was all about good vibes. Music, art and romance filled the old brick streets. Love summer!
check out this art event on Saturday! silent auction included...
The 6th edition of the Panama´s Jazz Festival is on its 4th day. Yesterday, we went to an amazing concert hosted by the Spanish Embassy featuring Flamenco Jazz. A spicy combination!
When I was little I had dogs, cats a rabbit and even a hen. But I lived in a house in the suburbs, and pets where the "must do" of the area. When I moved to Casco Viejo, one of the things I never imagined having, as I´m living in an apartment, was to have a pet. But last week,
A historic event took place today. The old music conservatory came alive. A dream came true. Lives where changed. All because of two visionaries: Danilo Perez and Conservatorio S.A.
Althought the official calendar for the Panama Jazz Festival points out January 12th as the starting date for the festival, and even if the concerts are the better known part of the festival, in fact it really has a very important educational component that started early on this week.
Live! artists painting all over Plaza Bolivar. A silent auction during the very loud Panama Jazz Fest. Learn more about this art show organized by Kristin Dove in Casco Antiguo.
Carlos Weil Art Gallery and the Ministry of Culture will present Jazz and Canal, a collective art show of antiques related to the Panama Canal: original bonds, photographies, paintings and even music scores. We have known Carlos for many years, and I have to say his collection is always intriguing and brings something different to the table. So don´t miss this opportunity! It will be at Las Bovedas Gallery in Plaza Francia.
After a year of several shocks, ups and downs in value, and true uncertainty regarding the future, we wanted to start fresh this new year with an inspirational thought
With a golden summer sun shinning over its beautiful colonial buildings and brick streets, Casco Antiguo welcomes 2009 with a bag of good news:
New year, new office, new adventures! Arco Properties at its own headquarters!
The Panama Jazz Festival is almost here! they just sent a message through their Facebook group announcing their first music workshop. Registrations open until December 20th. Find here the info for all of you who might be interested:
My office is a mess!!!!! But my frustration of putting all in boxes and dealing with transferring phones is only balanced by the excitement of moving to our own headquarters. Yes!!!!
Surfing the web I found this good set of virtual tours of Casco Antiguo. Check them out! we also have a section in the website that shows a couple, but these guys have different views, so between the two you can get good visuals of the historic city. The photos aren´t that good, so go straight to the map and click on the red dots.
As Christmas approaches, the city goes crazy. Yesterday, Panama´s traditional Christmas Parade took over Avenida Balboa. Thousands of kids running around, piling up to see the cars and trucks dressed up with miscellaneous Christmas themes. But where are all these props made? you would be surprised to know that the "Factory of Dreams" carved in foam is in Casco Viejo. More specifically, next to the Cathedral, run not by Santa but by Franz.
Clara and Jennifer are one of our favorite Casconians outside Casco. They are so nice and cook so well that we almost forgive them not being in Casco Viejo. But not for long! I hope...
After a long absence
One of the fondest memories I have of Christmas is going to visit my grandmother ( a former Casconian, waaaayyyy back when…) and spend hours either making or playing with the Christmas Model Town. We call it “el nacimiento” which in few words describes a small town made out of toys featuring the Christian nativity scene. You could go all the way up with those things, there where those who took the entire garage in their homes and did a real mini Israel out of it.
Just came back from Miami Art Basel. These fairs are great because it is like an open discussion not only on social issues but on what beauty is for each one. Casco Antiguo has beautiful buildings, parks and scenes, it is true... but nothing beats the beauty of its people. And not beauty in the conventional magazine-model type but on the beauty of feeling just great even if you are wearing hair rolls that are twice the size of your head. And orange.
Last night, the Casco Antiguo community came together to celebrate the opening of Galeria Vida and Entre Pulgas. They took the opportunity to close up Calle 3era (behind Hotel Central) and have a neighborhood party with food and drinks for everyone. It was Christmas spirit all over, as right on the corner, Casa Gongora had the choir concert, singing traditional and Panamanian Christmas Carrols

Yesterday I had a fantastic evening with a client who is looking to move to Casco Antiguo next year. It was very interesting to hear him out, not only why he was moving out from the States (the financial crisis, the lack of opportunities for a young guy to get a business going unless you had a lot of cash) but also his view on why Panama (and Casco Viejo, of course) is his best strategy under the difficult circumstances.
Today I was having lunch at Casuale (calle 1era) and saw this historic photo... which I happened to have the current angle! freaky, no?
Two interesting articles have come out about Panama related to the latest James Bond film Quantum of Solace: The Telegraph "Property in Panama... Wherever they laid their hats" by Teresa Manchan and Five James Bond Escapes by Oliver Pug (The Independent). Check their quotes on Casco Viejo and interviews to residents and owners!
Arco Chato is one of the most known landmarks in Casco Viejo and is a direct responsible on why the Panama Canal is here and not in Nicaragua. After years of being neglected, it finally fell in 2003. I call it a lesson on never taking stuff for granted, and that things like a "country" aren´t just there... they need to be nurtured and taken care of. Now is back up and with new additions that will give a boost to the local community.
Casco Antiguo is gearing its construction towards the most productive time of the year: summer! Learn about the status of the projects and where can you buy units. Ranging from all sorts of amenities to tax benefits and architectural styles.
Looking for apartments or commercial spaces for under $280,000 ? you can browse or website, or look at our map right here!
Every day, clients ask me about real estate prices in Casco Antiguo. So far, it has been difficult to organize, but I feel a word has to be put out there to educate both buyers and sellers on the reality of the market. So many times owners would price things out of range, or buyers would be confused by what might be a good deal or not. These charts might give you a good overview on what has happened on the latest transactions on both residential and commercial.
"A Cultural Cornerstone" is today´s New York Times travel article about Casco Viejo, Panama, featuring our favorite hotel Canal House Panama as editor´s pick and businesses like Karavan Gallery and Indigo Restaurant. I love it when people visit, but the best for me is to live here...
When you arrive into Casco Viejo you know if you belong here. Some have it tattooed in their foreheads.... or other parts! if you think I´m kidding, read this True Casco Viejo Story. Pictures won´t let me lie!
If you are planning to travel to Panama and exploring real estate will probably be part of the fun, this is the people you’ll need to meet:
Multiple websites and adds mention Panama as Paradise. Is it really? what about Casco Viejo?
Buying a restored apartment is one of the best investments you can make in Casco Viejo. It is an almost risk free enterprise where your costs are known and very little variation occurs. Also, you can get it rented almost immediately and your big gain is in the appreciation, so you can legally "sit on it" forever. But there are a couple of things you need to know.
Panama will have a Renaissance Hotel (by Marriott) by 2011. This announcement was made by Edward Fuller, president and executive director for Marriott International in the region, who mentioned this would be an investment of about 40 million dollars. "Panama´s economics are strong and the hotel industry is in constant growth". Renaissance Panama Hotel is expected to have
Looking to open a business in Casco Viejo, Panama? Or maybe to rent an apartment? There is always limited product, but from time to time things will come to market (and get rented right away). I actually had to pull out 2 units while writing this issue!
Have you seen those TV shows where they take a one level house and turn it into a mansion or where they promise you to look at least ten years younger by changing your makeup, style or even surgery? I have seen some incredible human makeovers in a show that is all about plastic surgery.
Well, in a way, restorations at Casco Viejo have the same incredible effects.
Ah! La Bella Roma! From the cradle of Western civilization to a huge melting pot, for those who have visited or lived in Rome it blows your mind away and steals a piece of your heart. But if you actually want to own a piece of Rome, you’d better be prepared to give also your kidney away (the good one), an eye and seriously consider adding up one of your lungs to sweeten the deal. Wao. The incredible thing isn’t that prices are astronomically high; it is that at over $20,000 US dollars per mt2 or $2,000 per ft2 people are still buying.
Ok. So Panama is about 20 years behind on releasing its E Commerce legislation, but ... hey! ... at least it is out there now! know more about it, download the law.
The Cinta Costera (coast strip) at Panama´s Balboa Avenue is moving forward and fast. Regardless of the many comments regarding the percentage of actual green area vs cement and plazas or the origin of the funding for the huge work, I have to say that Odebrecht has done a great job getting things done on record time.
Meditating about what has value and what doesn´t is a profound activity, almost zen-like. It has to do with the fundamentals of the property, but on a bigger picture even that is subdued to one and only factor: what makes a human happy.
Buying real estate in Casco Antiguo is a research intensive task. It is about information (of course) but also about gut feeling. A mix between ...
Last night most of Panama´s socialites (or our version of it anyways) gathered in Paseo Las Bovedas, to the launch party of Quintessentially in Casco Antiguo. Don´t miss the photos, I´m sure they´ll be quite popular between some of our visitors...
Our friend Mary sent us this interesting article. I smiled at the phrase "the secret is out" since it´s been out for a while now, but a good word out is always welcomed!
I held a very interesting conversation the other day with two young fund managers about the US recession and it´s impact on Panama. One an optimist, the other a pesimist, myself in the middle, all three actually had a basic common opinion about investment here. Somehow, Bear Stearns shares it too...
Panama Real Estate Investment: This is a small project which we hope plant the seed for a big change and help raise the bar in developments in the area. It will be the first project in the old city to have...
Panama Real Estate Investments: In 2007, Panamanian economy grew 9.5%. This is Panama´s 4th year of sustained growth where the GNP per person has incremented 7.7%. Public debt was reduced (from 61% to 54%) and public investment increased. Find out more!
It´s official: 20 Year Property Tax Exoneration for new apartments and residences for projects with occupation permits until December 31st 2009. Read La Prensa Article here
Panama Real Estate Summer Investments: December is one of the most pleasant months in Panama. It also means January is right around the corner, the dry season is coming, which means huge productivity in construction for all the projects.
Investing in Real Estate in Panama. I often comment on my clients that Casco Antiguo is like Woody Allen: either you hate it or you love it, there is no "in between". It is definatly not for everyone. For the right person, it is very easy to fall in love with it on their first visit. They get the same feeling as a kid walking into a store with tons of candy, wide smile on their faces, dreams about their restored home. But... hey! wake up! it takes some serious work and personal honesty to go further this point and succeed.
